Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has cast a shade at the Former President and Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama after the latter suggested that he was running the economy from textbooks in his latest Facebook Live session.

“I would have hoped that Bawumia will give another lecture at Central University and say some of the same theoretical things he used to say. You don’t run an economy from textbooks. You don’t run an economy with economic lectures.

It takes innovation and smart thinking to be able to do all these. They have not been in government before. They were very naïve, asked 170 theoretical questions and later set up a 40-man committee to understand why the currency is depreciating. Something that our own university students can do,” Mr Mahama said in January.

But in what appears to be a subtle response to the opposition leader’s rants, the Vice President in his presentation at the 7th Town Hall Meeting in Kumasi on Tuesday said any professional or economist who does not put what he learnt from textbooks into practice is likely to “end up mismanaging the economy with Akomfem Economic Management Techniques, with disastrous results”.

“Can you imagine an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer or an accountant who after qualifying decides not to use what they learnt in school; say forget about everything you learnt in the textbooks, when you are actually practicing; can you imagine”, he quizzed.

Describing Ghana’s current economic position as one by a “remarkable turnaround”, chalked over the last three years by making a difference with “vision, dedication and competence”, he said, “we have outperformed the NDC in virtually every sphere of the economy; I mean every sphere”.

“We have appropriately combined sound economic theory (as taught in our textbooks) with the collective experience of our Economic Management Team and Cabinet under the leadership of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the management of our economy”, he noted.

He challenged the NDC to present a contrary set of data to contest all what he put out at the maiden town hall meeting in 2020 and not resort to “insults or running “away to Burkina Faso”.

“In all, we made 388 promises in our manifesto; the most recent validation exercise at the end of January 2019 shows that we had delivered or delivering on 303 (78% of the promises), up from the 72% reported earlier; the data shows that under Nana Akufo-Addo, our management of the economy has been rather solid with many remarkable achievements after only 3 years”, he concluded.

The Vice President however admitted that, the government has “not attained perfection in everything we have done but we are modernizing and transforming this country in fundamental ways for the future”.

He asked Ghanaians to “keep faith” with the Akufo Addo Administration, because, “the future is bright if we stay the course. That is why were are asking the good people of Ghana to give Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP, four more to do more for you”.
