We have received, with shock, the news of the passing of Congressman John Lewis

Last year as part of the Historic Year of Return, commemorating Four hundred (400) years after the first documented enslaved Africans arrived in America, Rep. John Lewis together with the Congressional Black Caucus, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a historic visit to Ghana. Together with his compatriots they condemned the “grave evil” of slavery and made it clear that their visit to Ghana was about acknowledging the past while also looking to the future with hope.

We recall his visit to the “Door of No Return” at Elmina and Cape Coast Castles and his encouragement for every person of African descent to look back home to Africa. He indicated the trip was his second to Ghana and expected many more visits in the future.
Rep. Lewis is known to have lived his whole life fighting for the values our nation Ghana is built on “Freedom and Justice” and we are glad he came home a few months ago to celebrate the African spirit of resilience.

His work as a civil rights activist surely has contributed to the call and movement to make “Black Lives Matter”.

On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, we mourn with the family, the congressional black caucus, the African American community, and the global African family. May he rest peacefully.
