TERTIARY ACCOMMODATION TOO HIGH IN GHANA

The university being autonomous is gradually becoming too worrisome.
The tertiary authorities, wealthy people, institutions, Unions and other entities are taking too much advantage of the poor youths in Ghana.
Why can’t government or religious bodies task our universities to be mindful to the need of the poor?

Government acquired land either by Compulsory acquisition or gift. Start an academic institution. Granted you the autonomy to operate after training you at no cost.Government built on the land with funds from the state coffers including some hostels or dormitories facilities, hand it over to the authorities of the university,Colleges of Education,Nursing Colleges,Technical Universities and other professional training institutions.

Immediately this institutions start operation, wealthy people, Unions and other money making entities will rush to the government acquired lands and either pay few coins to government or tertiary authorities and build hostels for accommodation for students at unreasonable rental cost.

Our institutions have eventually evolved into MONEY MAKING oven.Yet, we pay them by Nationally Generated Funds. They are making a lot of money but doing nothing to add to the seasonal accommodation problems.UG,UCC,KNUST,UEW,UMAT,VVU,Private Universities, Colleges of Education, Technical Universities, Nursing Colleges are making huge some of money all in the name of ACCOMMODATION.

TERTIARY students pay huge sums of money to get rooms. This is bad.
Some hostel rooms can accommodate four students and each student pays GHS 1,500 per year totalling 6,000gh and dividing by 12months means a room is for rent of GHS 500. How can we be insensitive to the plight of our future leaders who are now schooling?

Sometimes a room accommodating 8 students and each pays GHS 1,000 totalling 8,000gh per annum. Sad for our future.

Surprisedly, some individuals or business entities buys student’s mattress at a cost of GHS 500 and use it to rent students 100gh per semester.meaning within a year a student pays roughly 300Gh for mattress. These individuals and entities have used the same mattress to rent students for over 10 years at such cost or more, ceteris paribus.

Sometimes, is the government who purchased the student’s beds and mattresses from the taxpayers money and the school authorities charge student’s at huge cost for rentals.
We do this to ourselves especially tertiary students and think everything should be normal.

Government institutions is NOT MONEY MAKING VENTURE/PROFIT MAKING ARENA.

Government should take a closer look at tertiary student’s hostels and accommodation.Parliamentarians must look into this and find way-out to regulate the tertiary students hostels or accommodation.

The media as the fourth arm of government should visit our various campuses to know more about entities who are killing our students with huge rents for accommodation.
THE TERTIARY STUDENTS DESERVES BETTER.
