SAMMY GYAMFI’S DEFENSE FOR WHY THEIR RUNNING MATE CANCELLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES IS PATHETIC
I listened to Sammy Gyamfi mounting a strong defense for the party’s running mate against the accusation that she supervised the cancellation of the teacher trainees’ allowance while she was in charge of the Education Ministry.
In his austere statement at her defense, the National Communications Officer of the opposition party said that the decision to cancel the students’ allowance was a cabinet decision, and she could not, therefore, be held accountable for that decision.
Sometimes, I wonder if these people ponder over some of these statements before they publicize same.
Cabinet meetings are not held with ghosts. Cabinet Ministers attend such meetings to deliberate on issues relating to their respective ministries.
It is at such meetings that sector ministers have to table policies and defend them for adoption. It is at these same meetings that proposals tabled by the President or any other persons about one’s ministry are debated and adopted or rejected.
Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang tabled that policy of abolishing the trainee teachers’ allowance. If even she didn’t do it, clearly, she did not offer any defensive mechanism for same to be maintained. She was all for the cancellation of the allowances to the trainees.
This defense against this matter by Sammy Gyamfi is not only lame but absurd. This cannot unblemish this flaw in her stewardship which was nothing to clap for.
This hollow defense cannot wash away the blot on her stewardship because it is the responsibility of a sector minister to table, defend and debate against a policy on his or her ministry if same has the tendency to adversely harm the sector and its constituents.
