MTN MUST STOP THIS ILLEGAL DIRECT CHARGES ON CREDIT PURCHASED
Talk tax has been increased from Ghc 0.06 to Ghc 0.09 indicating a 50% increase. One of the Telcos, MTN especially, has actually decided to deduct the Ghc 0.09 talk charges increment straight from the credit purchased by customers instead of adding Ghc 0.03 increase to the already existing Ghc 0.06 talk tax to “the cost-per-minute talk charges as has always been the case which deducting it when a customer makes a direct call.
Under NDC regime, the 0.06 talk tax charges increase from Ghc 0.02 by the NDC (200% by the way), MTN did not deduct it straight from the credit purchased by their customers but rather it charged it on the cost per minute charges. The million dollar question is how come MTN especially is doing things differently when the talk tax is increased from Ghc 0.06 to Ghc 0.09 (50% increament)?
This is crystal clear that MTN has positioned itself on a grand agenda to cause disaffection for this government. One can clearly infer that, Per this draconian decision, MTN wants to use its customer-base numbers to work against this Government per their operations. MTN is supposed to “tax the talk charges” not “tax the credit purchased by customers directly”, I stress.
This is making the Government very unpopular in the eyes of many customers of MTN.
We need the Minister for Communication, Ursula to look at this issue again. I humbly suggest we revert to the taxing “the cost per minute of the talk charges” or cancelling it entirely.
