A NEW REGISTER FOR ELECTIONS 2020 NON-NEGOTIABLE ~ EC’s DIRECTOR OF ELECTIONS
The Director of Elections for the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to stick to its planned position of using a new voters’ register to run the 2020 elections.
Speaking to Philip Osei Bonsu on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Serebour dismissed suggestions that the EC should consider using the old register since the COVID-19 pandemic is making it impossible for a new register to be compiled for the country’s next elections.
“We have gone past the old register issue. All we are thinking about is getting a new register” he said.
He opined “For us at the EC, to have a credible and incontrovertible elections, we need a new register”
He re-emphasized that no one at the Electoral Commission would recommend for the old register to be used for the next elections since it is a topic they are done dealing with. To the EC, Dr. Quaicoe said, holding elections without a new register is not something that Commission is looking at.
“As far as the Commission is concerned, using the old register is not on our table” he stated.
He reminded Ghanaians that for even the old register to be used, there should be a limited registration exercise and if that can be done, then it would not be out of the norm to cause for a new register to be compiled.
He made the point that elections are not events but processes and if the Commission is unable to hold elections, that would be for the Constitution to deal with and not the Commission, he said.
