Ghanaians go to the polls in less than three months as political parties intensify their campaigns. The electorate weigh manifesto promises of political parties, look at the credibility or otherwise of the presidential candidates and take many other factors into consideration and vote accordingly.

Parties go into elections with flagship projects which usually get the masses enthralled to embrace same for which reason the party can be voted for in the elections.

The 2016 elections saw the New Patriotic Party promising to implement a Free Senior High School programme, a promise that was scoffed at by the then ruling NDC.

While many of the party’s leading members said it was a pipe dream, a mere wishful thinking, others also said that it would take over 20 years for such a policy to be possible.

Close to 50 anti-Free S.H.S advertisements were made by the NDC aimed at discrediting the policy as nothing but building castles in the air. The NDC urged Ghanaians to reject the promise because it was a scam of some sort.

The electorate saw a ray of hope in Akufo-Addo and voted massively for him. True to his promise, he implemented Free SHS in his first year. The rest, we say, is history.

In opposition, the onslaught against the implemented Free S.H.S programme continued unabated by Mahama and his charges.

John Mahama described it as ‘lala su lala’. He once said if he had GHS2 billion, he would not spend it on Free SHS. In effect, Mahama said Free SHS was a wasteful programme and ought not to be given much attention.

The flip-flop as he is, he later said Free SHS is here to stay when he realized the policy is what would keep him in opposition once again.

Travel to every part of the country and all your hear about is Akufo-Addo’s Free SHS policy. The testimonies praising the President and the policy are enormous.

Thousands of even NDC members are voting for Akufo-Addo because of Free SHS. Forget about any other thing in the news, the reigning champion is Free SHS and that is what will sink Mahama into oblivion in the December 7 elections. Free SHS is indeed the game changer in the upcoming elections.
