2020 ELECTIONS: DROBO QUEEN MOTHER AND DCE CAUSED JAMAN SOUTH MP’s DEFEAT – NPP YOUTH REVEALS
RESPONSE TO THE ALLEGATIONS MADE BY AMBASSADORS OF 4MORE4NANA, AN AFFILLIATE OF THE SKIRT AND BLOUSE GROUP IN JAMAN SOUTH
Good morning my good brothers and sisters of the media. We welcome you all to this press conference and thank you very much for honoring our invitation even though it was at a short notice.
We have called you here today to explain to the general public, through you, some issues that a group that calls itself ambassadors for 4more 4Nana, an affiliate of the skirt and blouse association raised in their press conference barely a week ago.
We first of all wish to condemn the attack on our brother Barfour Asare Kofi Israel last Monday by some criminals. We are aware of the plan to attack the key supporters of Hon. Yaw Afful one after the other. It is a primitive and shameful act and all those behind it must bow down their heads in shame. We appeal to the police to expedite matters to bring the perpetrators to book.
The NPP entered into the 2020 general elections with Hon Yaw Afful being the parliamentary candidate for our constituency. He won the parliamentary primaries held on the 20th of June 2020 to become the parliamentary candidate of the party for the fourth consecutive time. He entered into this election as the favorite but circumstances turned everything upside down and we lost the seat to the NDC. As typical of Ghanaians, like some people have chosen to do, we could have blamed it on people who we perceive to have contributed to this defeat, but we don’t want to do that because, the downfall of a man, they say, is not the end of his life. If indeed your downfall does not mean your end, you need not stay down and blame people, you get up and reorganize yourself. That is why the office of the Member of Parliament and Parliamentary candidate has not officially come out to blame anybody so far as our defeat to the NDC is concerned. However, it is also important to respond to allegations making rounds in some section of the media by some members of the party in the constituency who call themselves Ambassadors for Nana. Their allegations against the Member of Parliament are palpable lies aimed at tarnishing the hard won reputation of the Legislator. Below are our responses to their allegations one after the other.
1. THE DIVISIVE POSTURING OF THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT.
Hon. Yaw Afful became our Member of Parliament after he won the 2008 election. That same election sent the NPP government into opposition. For the eight years that the NPP was in opposition, he was the sole financier of all party activities in the constituency. His efforts and contributions made the party attractive to all manner of persons including known NDC members who publicly declared their support for the party because of him. Our votes in NDC strongholds appreciated because of him. Today, the NPP has taken over towns like Japekrom, Kwasibuokrom, etc, towns perceived to be the NDC’s strongholds because of the nature of Hon. Yaw Afful. So it is very shocking and unfortunate when people whose actions made the NPP lost votes in the constituency shamelessly go out on a blaming spree.
2. VINDICTIVE NATURE OF THE MP.
If there is any vindictive person in the NPP in the Jaman South Constituency today, it is the MCE who is the patron of their disguised skirt and blouse group but certainly not the MP. The MCE has rather victimized people like Samuel Obeng Takyi, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sinna Tachie, Serwaa Rebecca, Adubea Georgina, Asare Israel, Alhaji Amadu Ansomana, Elder John Nkrumah, Mr. Kwasi Yeboah Konadu, Mr. Appiah Tano, Henry Yaw Afful (Henforo) etc. so I wonder why his followers would rather want to brand the MP as vindictive. It is therefore not surprising that they could not mention any specific name of any person who has suffered his vindictiveness. For the avoidance of doubt, the MP’s support to people knows no bounds. He supports everybody including his known haters. Most of the members of their group have benefited one way or the other from the MP. Their boss, the MCE and his children have also benefited from the MP. The problem that some of the loyal supporters of the MP have with him is how he easily accommodate his enemies at their expense.
3. ARROGANCE AND UNNECESSARY DISPLAY OF OPULENCE BY THE MP AND HIS CLOSE ASSOCIATES
The good people of the Jaman South Constituency are the best persons to judge whether or not the MP is arrogant. Those guys who parade themselves as ambassadors of nana are rather the arrogant ones. The way they throw their weight about is sometimes very alarming because they have the MCE’s backing. The persons he referred to them as arrogant are the ones who campaigned for the MP to get over 22 000 votes. Their allegations are complete lies and fabrications aimed to justify their shameful conduct that led to a lot more people voting against our parliamentary candidate.
4. PERCEIVED NON PERFORMANCE OF THE M. P.
Hon. Yaw Afful is one of the best members of parliament in the region when it comes to execution of projects. His projects can be seen in almost all communities in the constituency; school buildings, clinics, durbar grounds, police stations, payment of school fees, hospital bills, and the likes. it is therefore not true that the Honorable MP lost because of non performance. He lost because of selfish interests of those enemies within, who joined forces with the NDC, sold out highly confidential party matters to our opponents, leaking of vital information from constituency executive committee meetings to their spokespersons to be leaked to the media and our political opponents cost us the seat. One would also ask why the spokesperson of the MCE who controls majority of the funds that comes to the assembly will blame a member of parliament for lack of projects. What was the contribution of his boss towards the campaign? Is it a concession of incompetence on the part of the MCE? Even the numerous calls on him to use the Assembly’s caterpillar to shape the roads was ignored just to make sure that the roads remain bad so that the electorate will blame it on the MP and vote against him. For the avoidance of doubt, the Hon. MP has lobbied for the following roads to be awarded on contract and contractors are currently on site; 15 km Fetentaa to Drobo road by J Adom Co. Ltd, 31.7 km baanafour – Zezera – Adamsu road by Alexiboam WBHO Co. Ltd, 6.1 km Drobo – Japekrom town roads, Drobo – Kwameseikrom road by Amo Prempeh Co. Ltd, 17.5 km Drobo – Miremano road, Babianiha – Atuna – Kwameprakrom road which is currently at central tender committee for review. Ladies and gentlemen, we all know that the leader of that group is the spokesperson of the MCE. If he want to blame the government that appointed his boss for not fixing our roads, he should be bold enough to say it and stop beating about the bush because we all know that MPs don’t pay road contractors. We want to ask Kwang Godfred and his group that what the Municipal Assembly, led by their boss Alhaji Abuu also has done in terms of development in the municipality. If they have any advice or blame so far as developmental projects are concerned, they should channel it to the MCE their boss because he controls all the resources that comes to the municipality.
5. RECKLESS UNENDING ATTACKS ON SOME ASSEMBLY MEMBERS, MCE AND VERY RESPECTABLE MEMBERS OF THE PARTY IN THE CONSTITUENCY
I am still not surprised that they only make allegations without substantiating same. The Honorable MP never attacked any assembly member. They are only being hunted by their corrupt practices. The names of those assembly members they mentioned were members of the Social Services subcommittee of the municipal assembly. It is a public knowledge that they squandered funds meant for persons living with disabilities. The executives of the disability group went on radio to expose them. The MCE formed a committee to investigate the matter. More than a year now, the MCE has not been able to release the report of the committee because he and his boys are implicated. The MP then threatened to report the matter to EOCO and that is another source of their hatred for the MP. They are very corrupt to the extent that they even mess up with disability funds. It is a matter of public record. They are now emboldened to speak because they have been covered by the MCE, their boss. Let it be put on record that, never has the MP or any of the communicators spoken against any party elder or any chief in the constituency and it is not surprising that they couldn’t mention any name as they were bold in mentioning names of assembly members or provide any form of evidence to support their claim. I am therefore challenging them to produce any audio or video as an evidence to support their claim. At least we have evidence of them on record, saying unprintable words against the person of the MP just to discredit his reputation.
6. THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT’S RADIO STATION (Jaman Radio)
Jaman radio is the best thing that happened to our campaign going into the 2020 general elections. They covered every single activity of the party in the constituency for free. They sponsored the program “NPP hour” and other NPP programs for over six months. How would a station established by the parliamentary candidate work against that same candidate? It is an undeniable fact that the MCE always hesitated to invite Jaman radio to programs organized by the assembly because they have exposed his corrupt practices. Nobody can ever blame Jaman radio for the defeat. Their contribution to the campaign can never be underestimated. When COVID-19 was at its peak, Jaman Radio devoted one solid hour each day for over 6 months for free for health workers and other stakeholders to do the necessary education to the public. Everybody in the constituency is aware how these skirt and blouse volunteers used other radio stations to sell their propaganda. Jaman radio rather came to the rescue of the party to counter their dirty campaign against the party and our candidates. The regional chairman had to come in to ban all party activities on that radio station. Even when the regional chairman had issued this directive, these so called party lovers disobeyed and rather insulted the regional chairman. They were given airtime on that radio twice every week to do skirt and blouse campaign.
All persons who devoted their time to campaign for the party were insulted and vilified by these same people on their propaganda radio station, including the venerable Col. Kwadwo Damoah. It is also on public record.
7. M.P’S REFUSAL TO COOPERATE FOR THE PARTY TO UNITE AFTER THE PRIMARIES
After the primaries in June, the constituency council of elders convened a reconciliation meeting. The MP and anybody that matter attended but the man whose boys are now blaming the MP for disunity did not attend. The regional chairman also convened a reconciliation meeting at Ahenfie Hotel in Berekum. The MP and his opponents took photographs at the meeting. When party communicators talked about the beauty of it on radio, this same group led by one Buabeng Clarence came to say that it wasn’t Mr. Prince Marfo’s intention to take any photograph with the MP but the MP rather arranged for that because he wanted to associate himself with their candidate who lost.
The shooting incident at Nyamefie is a matter with the regional police command and so wouldn’t want to speak much about it. However, it is mind boggling that supporters of a particular candidate wouldn’t follow him but rather choose to follow his opponent. Our intelligence indicates that those guys are thugs imported into the constituency by the main opponent of the MP to assassinate him. When they encountered the security detail of the MP and attempted to snatch one of their weapons, they shot them. They then decided to escape and were apprehended at Drobo. Why didn’t they report that matter to the police but rather decided to run away? The facts speak for itself. For them to raise that issue in their presser is an exercise in self indictment. The confiscated mobile phone is also with the regional police command.
8. NEGLIGENCE ON THE PART OF THE PARTY HIERARCHY
If the party executives are not negligent, these guys would not be walking about accusing others on daily basis. Their actions and inactions warranted suspension even before the conduct of the 2020 elections. They are surprised that despite all what they did, they were left off the hook that is why they have the audacity to say that the party hierarchy exhibited negligence, however, one of them, Buabeng Clarence is currently under indefinite suspension.
For the avoidance of doubt, the constituency council of elders, the regional chairman, the general secretary and even the president all came to the constituency to add their voice not to vote skirt and blouse but the ”powers that be” rejected all those calls. Ideally, Party primaries have been conducted, parliamentary candidate selected, we move on. Why would one candidate who has lost demand that party hierarchy must meet him and his supporters before he cooperate.
9. HOARDING ITEMS MEANT FOR PARTY MEMBERS AND SELECTIVELY GIVEN TO HIS FAVOURITES
The inconsistency in their allegations says it all. In one breath, the MP has hoarded items meant for the campaign in his house, in another breath, he has given them to his favorites. Which is which? The fact of the matter is that, when the bulbs arrived, the assembly took delivery of them. The MCE and his boys attempted to distribute them as part of their skirt and blouse campaign but they were instructed to hand them all over to the NPP parliamentary candidate. The pain of it is the driving force of this unfounded allegation. The bulbs have all been distributed and every community has gotten its fair share of it. However, no gas cookers were brought for the campaign. The sewing machines were given to the MP few days before the elections. There is no way he could have distributed them before the polls. These skirt and blouse campaigners sold this to the voting public that made a section of them angry with the parliamentary candidate and voted against him. Undoubtedly, the MP has personally bought over a hundred of such machines to young people who are learning various trades.
10. LAST MINUTE REJECTION OF PARTY AGENTS
No faithful party agent was rejected or prevented from working for the party. The party trained ten people at each polling station. Any person who was sent to the polling station as an agent was trained. Those who claim to have been rejected were rejected by their own polling station executives because of their involvement in the skirt and blouse campaign. The MP did not select any polling agent. They were all selected out of the ten who were trained.
In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen, we want to put on record, that the Hon. MP did not lose the election because of low performance. It is an issue of public record that he has performed marvelously well in the constituency. The few disgruntled party supporters who by their personal parochial interest joined forces with the NDC and caused the damage. The majority of the party people are those who voted for the parliamentary candidate. Now that the election is over, we appeal to all aggrieved party people to let bygones be bygones and support the party in these difficult times so that we can take back our seat again in the next election. This is not the time to blame. This is the time to do proper introspection and plan on how to achieve this objective.
However, we accept the decision of NEC setting up a committee to investigate why the NPP lost some of our seats to the NDC. We will cooperate with the committee when need be to make their work a successful one. Thank you.
