One of the key contenders for the regional chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Robert Asare-Bediako, has backed out of the contest.
The former Asokwa Chairman who is a key contender in the race announced the shocking news on an Accra-based radio station on Thursday.
“I have the NPP at heart but, upon sober reflection and introspection; and, circumstances beyond my control, I gracefully suspend my campaign,” he said.
Mr Asare-Bediako had promised to unite the rank and file of the party in the region to retain power in 2020.
The man who had boasted that he had over four decades of experience in party politics and was therefore prepared and determined to work for the NPP to continue to benefit from his rich experience said he reached the decision “upon sober reflection and introspection and circumstances beyond his control“.
He explained that the race for the position of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman is not about his parochial interest but his desire for a strong regional coalition.
“My hope and faith in the grassroots of the party remain unshakable. We need to enforce the unity, solidarity and peace front of the Region,” he added.
Chairman Asare-Bediako further extended his gratitude to some bigwigs of the NPP, including members of his campaign team and sympathizers whose sacrifices served as the anchor for his campaign.
