The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to render an apology to its Vice Presidential Candidate after an allegation that he induced two EC officials to breach the electoral laws of the country was dismissed.
Deputy NPP Communications Director, Anthony Abayifa Kabo, says Dr Mahamudu Bawumia deserves an apology from the NDC because a report by the EC has cleared him of the claim that he bribed two Walewale district EC officials with GHS10,000 to verify him at his residence in the just ended voter exhibition exercise.
“We have stated much earlier that Dr Bawumia was verified at a spot adjacent the verification center because the EC officers on the day were in the process of moving their equipment and documents in an attempt to seek shelter due to the prevailing weather condition…and that the GHS10,000 spurious and wicked liar which the NDC sought to put out in order to destroy Dr Bawumia has fallen flat because the Electoral Commission’s own investigation didn’t reveal that,” he told Dzifa Bampoh, host of Joy FM’s Newsnite programme.
The EC on July 29 dismissed two officials of its Walewale district office namely Jobey Ambrose and Mumuni Latiffa for allegedly being induced by Dr Bawumia with the sum of GH¢10,000 to breach the electoral laws of the country.
According to the EC, the duo was alleged to have taken the voters’ register and verification machine to Dr Bawumia’s house to have his particulars checked.
They were later summoned following a tip-off and after interrogation, they admitted to having verified the NPP Vice Presidential Candidate outside the Commission’s designated perimeter. They were fired and replaced immediately.
A three-member Committee set up to investigate the matter concluded said Dr Bawumia was verified outside the perimeter of the designated verification centers which contradicts the Commission’s own guidelines.
On the GHS10,000 bribe claim alleged to have been given to the two officers by the NPP Deputy Standard Bearer, the report did not say anything regarding that.
Even though the NPP says the EC’s investigation has vindicted Dr Bawumia, the NDC believes otherwise.
Walewale NDC Constituency Communication Director, Imoro Abdul Razak, told Joy News the Commission failed to address the claim regarding the GHS10,000.
Notwithstanding, he said they are “very sure that the information we got to the media has been confirmed by the EC report.”
But Mr Kabo said there is nothing in the EC’s report the NDC can hang on to as the “spurious and wicked lies” made against Dr Bawumia have crumbled.
He believes the NDC is bent on impugning the reputation of Dr Bawumia because he “has been quite a nightmare for them.”
When asked if the NPP will press charges against the NDC for tainting the reputation of the Vice Presidential Candidate, Mr Kabo said they have not considered that but would rather want the NDC to apologise for “lying wickedly.”
